Succeed in Your Ophthalmology Clerkship - Books & Tips
Sat Nov 15, 2008 2:29 pm
An ophthalmology clerkship can be difficult. Why? Because in all of your medical school training (all of those years) most of us only have 4 or 5 ophthalmology lectures! In a way, the limited ophthalmology information given to medical students makes sense - very few medical students are actually going to enter this specialized field.
But for those of us who are going to be ophthalmologists one day - we need some help!
Finally there is a book written especially for medical students entering an Ophthalmology Clerkship - Ophthalmology: A Brief Review. As a medical student on an Ophthalmology Clerkship, you will find that Ophthalmology books typically come in two sizes -
WAY TOO BIG (800-1000 pages of info - more than you need to know)
A LITTLE TOO SMALL (80 pages with lots of figures - not quite enough information)
Ophthalmology: A Brief Review was written to find that middle ground that provides medical students with enough information to really understand and succeed at an ophthalmology clerkship without all the extraneous info that ophthalmology residents have to memorize to pass their board exams. Ophthalmology: A Brief Review is an excellent introduction to the field packed into 71 pages of text. The information is detailed and to the point!
All of the basic subjects of ophthalmology are covered including Anatomy, Pharmacology, Cornea, Retina, Uveitis and much more... Especially useful is the section on Procedures and Practices in the OR and the Office. Ophthalmic Surgery is facinating, but before you step into the OR to observe a PK, learn a little about the procedure, its risks, and follow-up regimen.
Preview Ophthalmology: A Brief Review including the table of contents and several sample chapters
here.
One of the trickiest parts of an Ophthalmology Clerkship can be PRONUNCIATION. Once again those 4 or 5 ophthalmology lectures in medical school probably didn`t leave you with a strong grasp of the LANGUAGE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY! In general, ophthalmology attendings expect medical students to know very little about the science and language of ophthalmology when they start a rotation - BUT WHY NOT IMPRESS THEM! Impress the attendings with you level of knowledge and understanding of the Language.
LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY .... Before your rotation with Ophthalmology: A Brief Review AUDIO MP3!
Here`s a simple example. The most common ophthalmic surgery is cataract surgery call phacoemulsification. The "a" is pronounced with a "long a" sound like "ate" NOT a "short a" sound like "at." This is what is meant by learning the LANGUAGE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY. Accurate pronunciation makes you sound intelligent and knowledgable. Ophthalmology: A Brief Review AUDIO MP3 will give you the edge that many students won`t have. That can make the difference between the attendings remembering you a GREAT, MOTIVATED, and REALLY MEMORABLE medical student OR just another student along for an easy clerkship.
Now that we have discussed Ophthalmology: A Brief Review, there are several other texts that I used a medical student during Ophthalmology Clerkships (unfortunately for me, Ophthalmology: A Brief Review wasn`t around when I was a medical student.
Other Highly Recommended books include:
Ophthalmology Made Ridiculously Simple
The Wills Eye Manual: Office and Emergency Room Diagnosis and Treatment of Eye Disease
Review Questions in Ophthalmology: A Question and Answer Book
Ophthalmology Review Manual
The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Review Manual for Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology Board Review (Pearls of Wisdom)
Wishing you all the best on your Ophthalmology Clerkship!

CEORN Review Book for Nurses: Ophthalmology A Brief Review
Sun Oct 05, 2008 8:25 pm
The CEORN and Ophthalmology: A Brief Review for Nurses, Medical Students......
The CEORN is the Certification Examination for Ophthalmic Registered Nurses. I was once asked to prepare a lecture for nurses studying for the CEORN.
The two books that were most recommended for the CEORN were impossible for me to find. One CEORN book was out of print, and the other was on back order (for nine months now, I still haven`t received it).
For this reason, I decided to publish Ophthalmology: A Brief Review for Nurses, Medical Students, & Ophthalmic Technicians as a "PRINT ON DEMAND" textbook at LuLu.com. That way the book will NEVER BE OUT OF PRINT!
Basically, I developed a curriculum that nurses studying for the CEORN would find useful and wrote the text. Along the way, I discovered that Ophthalmology: A Brief Review for Nurses, Medical Students, & Ophthalmic Technicians was an excellent text for all members of the healthcare team including ophthalmic billing specialist, ophthalmic coders, medical students on an ophthalmology rotation, and ophthalmic technicians and OR technicians in the eye room.
The book gives you the basic knowledge, and beyond, to be a contributing member of the ophthalmic healthcare
What`s more, I made the book available in printed text, PDF download, and MP3 audiobook download so that you can study using the method that is best for you!

Ophthalmology: A Brief Review---Section 1: Anatomy
Ophthalmology Review Book for Medical Students, Ophthalmology Book for Medical Students, Ophthalmology Book for Ophthalmology Clerkship, Ophthalmology Book for Ophthalmology Rotation, Ophthalmology Book for Nurses, Ophthalmology Book for Technicians, Ophthalmology Book for Operating Room Technicians, Ophthalmology Book for Ophthalmic Technicians
Where do you start while studying for your ophthalmology rotation???
I suggest a basic understanding of anatomy as laid out in Ophthalmology: A Brief Review. This section is laid out in a logical thought process. The structure`s name, then what it is, where it is, and what it does. Check out the basic anatomy below.
• SECTION 1: ANATOMY & EMBRYOLOGY
Let`s begin with a review of basic ocular anatomy and physiology
• Eyeball Anatomy
Cornea- the clear, transparent window in the front of the eye.
Sclera- white part of the eye that is continuous with the Cornea
Limbus- junction between Cornea and Sclera
Conjunctiva- skin that covers the Sclera
Tenon`s Capsule- fibrous tissue that is located between the Conjunctiva and Sclera
Iris- pigmented eye muscle behind the cornea with an opening for light (called the
Pupil)
Trabecular Meshwork- at the Cornea/Iris junction, it drains Aqueous Humor from the
eye to the Canal of Schlemm
Ciliary Body- pigmented eye muscle behind the Iris that creates Aqueous Humor and
changes the shape of the Lens
Lens- focuses light on the Retina (remember, the Cornea and Lens are both necessary
to focus light on the Retina. The Cornea is actually more powerful than the Lens)
Zonules- ligaments that extend from the Ciliary Body to the Lens to hold it in place
Anterior Chamber- Aqueous-filled space between the Cornea and Iris
Posterior Chamber- Aqueous-filled space between Iris and Lens
Vitreous Cavity- Vitreous-filled space between the Lens and Retina
Vitreous Humor- a jelly-like substance that becomes more liquid with age
Aqueous Humor- a liquid, plasma like substance that flows from the Posterior Chamber
to the Anterior Chamber
Retina- innermost layer of the eye that contains photoreceptor and senses light
Choroid- middle layer of the eye that provides some (1/3) of the blood supply to the
Retina via the Choriocapillaris
Uvea – pigmented structures of the eye including Iris, Choroid, and Ciliary Body
Sclera- outermost layer of the eye (see above)
Optic Nerve- sensory nerve that carries messages from the Retina to the Brain
Central Retinal Artery and Vein- pass through the Optic Nerve to supply most (2/3) of
the blood supply to the Retina
Fovea- the area of sharp, distinct vision in the retina
TAKE HOME POINT - The vitreous gel is responsible for the conditions known as floaters. Floaters occur as the vitreous gel becomes more and more liquid with age. It is a natural process that everyone experiences. However, floaters can be a sign of something more dangerous - such as a retinal hole, retinal detachment, or hemorrhage into the vitreous cavity. How do you tell the difference? As the ophthalmologist, you will perform a retinal exam with "Scleral Depression." Scleral depression allows the ophthalmologist to evaluated the entire retina, out to the Ora Serrata (where the retina ends and the pars plana begins).

Introduction to Ophthalmology a Brief Review A Book for Medical Students, Ophthalmic Nurses, and Ophthalmic Technicians
First Question - Why write a book about ophthalmology in the first place? There a hundreds of ophthalmology texts out there... why is this one different?
The answer is this book was written for you!
As a medical student, I did four ophthalmology rotations around the country to see what the different programs had to offer. My favorite book, by far, was Ophthalmology Made Ridiculously Simple. Its a great book, but I wanted more information.
So my second favorite book was the Washington Manual of ophthalmology - but 1000 pages is too much for me to read. I wished there was something in between... and now there is! Ophthalmology a Brief Review available at LuLu.com.
The book is 71 pages (not 1000) and jam-packed full of information that will make you a star in your rotation.
Second question - why do an audio version of the textbook???
I used audiobooks to study all the way through medical school and had great success. Unfortunately the best books aren`t available from the major publishers - so I started my own company to make medical audiobooks - and here we are. The AUDIOBOOK VERSION available at LuLu.com contains all the information that is in the book (not to mention accurate pronunciation of ophtho terms - so you don`t just know the answer, you know how to pronounce it!).

LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY before your rotation!
As a student... a medical student, it`s hard to know where to start in studying for an Ophthalmology rotation. The fact is, I didn`t want to read a1000 page book for a two week rotation (even if I was going into Ophthalmology!)
When I started, there was one book on the market that was small enough to be a great introduction - Ophthalmology Made Ridiculously Simple - but I wanted a little more detail than I found in the book.
So I wrote Ophthalmology: A Brief Review for Nurses, Medical Students, & Ophthalmic Technicians available at LuLu.com.
Ophthalmology: A Brief Review
The book is full of details on ophthalmic conditions and treatments - enough to lay a firm foundation for your Ophthalmology rotation.
Because I used audio tapes to study throughout medical school, I have also made the book available in audio MP3 format available at http://www.apolloaudiobooks.com.
Our motto is:
LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY before your rotation.
The book is available to BUY NOW at LuLu.com Ophthalmology: A Brief Review
Over the next few weeks, I highlight the book, go through the chapters, answer some questions, and hopefully make your ophthalmology rotation a little easier!
